Dear readers. You have probably noticed the lack of posts in last few week and wondering why. Since two weeks ago my computer has died and all of the date has stayed with it. I am not able to find and again restore my collection which was grand to say the least, and thus it will take a while to do that. I am writing from my computer at work which is horrible by the way and I stay in hope that I will soon be able to get a new computer. The situation that I am in is not financially good so please be patient.

The late Carl Sagan said (which is related to this documentary) “We’ve arranged a global civilization in which most crucial elements profoundly depend on science and technology. We’ve also arranged things so that almost no one understands science or technology. We might get away with it for a while, but sooner or later, this combustible mixture of ignorance and power is going to blow up in our faces”. This documentary film poses the question: Are we making Holes in Heaven? HAARP (High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program) is a controversial high frequency radio transmitter, or “ionospheric heater,” which is believed to be descended from the works of Nikola Tesla and is operated by the U.S. Navy/Air Force and Phillip Laboratories in remote Gakona, Alaska.  Using HAARP, the military can focus a billion-watt pulsed radio beam into our upper atmosphere, ostensibly for ionospheric research. This procedure will form extremely low frequency waves and send them back to the Earth, enhancing communications with submarines and allowing us to “see” into the Earth, detecting anything from oil reserves to underground missile silos.  However, several researchers claim HAARP poses many dangers, including blowing thirty-mile holes in the Earth’s upper atmosphere. They also warn of possible disruption of the subtle magnetic energies of our Earth and ourselves. Holes in Heaven? is a prime example of grassroots filmmaking by producer Paula Randol-Smith and Emmy-winning director Wendy Robbins. Narrated by Martin Sheen, the documentary, investigates HAARP, its history and implications, and examines the dangers and benefits of high and low frequencies and of electromagnetic technology.

The tragedy taking place in Darfur as seen through the eyes of an American witness and who has since returned to the US to take action to stop it. Uses the photographs and first hand testimony of former U.S. Marine Captain Brian Steidle to take the viewer on a journey into the heart of Darfur, Sudan, where an Arab run government is systematically executing a plan to rid the province of its black African citizens. As an official military observer, Steidle had access to parts of the country that no journalist could penetrate. Ultimately frustrated by the inaction of the international community, Steidle resigned and returned to the US to expose the images and stories of lives systematically destroyed. We witness Steidle's transformation from soldier to observer to witness and, finally, to passionate activist and moral hero.

Pripyat - Ghost City Chronicles (2008)

The word Chernobyl became known worldwide shortly after the 1986 blast. The small town Pripyat, situated just 3000 metres from the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, up to this day serves to remind about the extent of the tragedy. Pripyat used to be a lively little town, both a powerful nuclear centre and a conveniently planned city with schools and urban apartments. It is now a dead, lifeless stretch of land littered with scraps of the past. Aleksey Yaroshevsky takes a walk along the streets of the ghost town.

Inside Chernobyl’s Sarcophagus (1996)

Review:
"The Refugees Of The Blue Planet" is a very sad and truly moving documentary by Quebecois filmmakers, Hélène Choquette & Jean-Philippe Duval, about the ever growing phenomenon of environmental refugees. These are people who have been displaced as a result of the ever growing number of natural disasters (which the documentary argues are a result of global warming), or as a result of the negligence of corporations and governments who makes deals to extract hazardous resources on peoples land, utilize practices which degrade the environment, or force people off their land for the creation of monoculture farms. "They are constantly growing in number and often have no legal status, even though their right to a clean and sustainable environment has been violated." (nfb.ca) In numbers they have now surpassed the number of political and war refugees in the world (25 million:23 million). Oh and did I mention that these refugees aren't limited to third world and developing countries......it could be anyone.  We are taken to three very different parts of the world where people are suffering from three very different problems, all of which have made them environmental refugees. These stories are juxtaposed with interviews made by numerous scholars, human rights and environmental activists.

The Battle of Chernobyl (2006)

The accident that occurred at Chernobyl on 26th April 1986 was the most disastrous reactor malfunction in the history of nuclear power. 56 people died immediately following the accident and substantial amounts of radioactive material were released into the atmosphere. This contaminated not only the Ukrainian town nearby and surrounding regions but it also spread across western Europe and eventually around the globe. Hundreds of thousands of people had to be evacuated from the region and to date approximately 4,000 have died from the long-term effects of radiation poisoning.

Review:
This film shows the disaster of the Kuwaitian oil fields in flames. In contrast to the common documentary film there are no comments and few interviews. What must have been the hell itself is presented to the viewer in such beautiful sights and beautiful music that one has to be fascinated by it.

Wings of Hope (2000)

Review:
A rather amazing, harrowing and inspirational documentary from Werner Herzog about a 1971 plane crash in a South American jungle. A plane loaded with 92 passengers crashed in this jungle and only a seventeen-year-old woman survived. This woman, Juliane Koepcke, had to fight her way through the jungle before being found twelve days after the crash. Herzog takes this woman back to the scene of the crash and they hike through the jungle showing us the paths she took to live. This is a brilliant documentary that has a claustrophobic feel because it's simply amazing that this woman would survive the crash and it's even more amazing that she'd be able to find her way out of this jungle. Another curious note is that Herzog himself was getting ready to film Aguirre, the Wrath of God and was going to take this same flight but it was sold out. Seeing the woman going through the wreck site was also fascinating but depressing considering all the things we see.

Synopsis
On 29 May 1985 in Brussels' Heysel Stadium, the UEFA cup final between two of Europe's greatest teams, Liverpool and Juventus, was plunged into tragedy before the game even began. Thirty-nine fans - 32 of them Italian - died, crushed and suffocated, when a stadium wall collapsed, trapping the hundreds of Italians fleeing a charge led by Liverpool hooligans on the terraces. As the bodies laid out in front of the stadium were being transported to a military hospital a couple hours later, the final kicked off. Twenty years on, this documentary shows previously unbroadcast footage of the tragic events as they unfolded with interviews of Italians caught in the crush, and those who lost relatives and friends. It recounts the experiences of Belgian emergency workers who had to identify the victims - rendered unrecognisable in death - from their most personal possessions. Liverpool and Juventus players reflect on what they knew of the tragedy at the time and whether it was right to go out and play in the circumstances, as well as their role in the emergency efforts and attempt to calm traumatised fans. The documentary also offers an insight into the panic and confusion among those who took the decision to play the game - UEFA and Belgian FA officials, club representatives, international statesmen and the Belgian military. And how and why they reached the conclusion that to avoid further carnage, the final had to go ahead.
