High Score (2006)

Director:
Jeremy Mack

IMDB:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0808299/

Review:
Although technology continues to evolve, a group of die-hard gamers refuses to abandon the classic arcade games of yesteryear. The 80's live on for these enthusiasts, who compete against each other and history to record the world's highest scores. Portland gamer Bill Carlton is one of the most brazen, fearlessly taking on some of the toughest records on the books.  HIGH SCORE (2006) follows Bill as he attempts to take down the Atari classic Missile Command and its twenty year-old record. To get the 80 million points he'll have to play the game on one quarter for over two days straight. There is no pause button. There will be no sleep. There can only be one victor in this classic story of Man versus Missile Command.

Knjiga rekorda Sutke (2005) - The Shutka Book of Records

Director:
Aleksandar Manic

IMDB:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0494831/

Review:
There is no place like Shutka. Tucked away in the farthest reaches of Macedonia, it is a town full of champions. In Shutka, according to Aleksandar Manic's peculiar and funny documentary, everything is a competition; and there is always a winner, even if the decision is disputed. There's the man with the most money, the woman with the strongest opinions, the guy with the best suits, the greatest lovers, the most powerful music producer, the best bed maker for circumcisions, the best trainer of ganders and the best trainer of pigeons, to name a few. At one point, a townsperson says, “Anyone can make a child, but not just anyone can make a champion pigeon.” Shutka seems to be without much local economy or municipalities. But there's also no trace of hardship. Sure, the people are poor, but they appear happy. Toward the end of the film, one character explains that everyone in Shutka is on welfare, but the town always finds money for weddings and circumcisions. In a sense, Manic's film could be seen as a lesson in making the most of what you've got. It's difficult at times not to question the film's veracity—is there really an annual competition to determine who in Shutka has the most, best and oldest cassette tape collection? But that ultimately seems unimportant (and all available evidence suggests that Shutka is real). What matters is the town's passion and that everyone on screen is just so fully alive. This madcap, yet deeply humanistic documentary film celebrates the idiosyncratic characters that make up Shutka, a small Macedonian town which is home to the largest Roma (Gypsy) community in the world. Its fiercely combative inhabitants compete to have the biggest cassette collection, most suits, strongest gander, fastest dove and the sweetest canary. They also declare they have seen the scariest vampire, are the most sophisticated, and are possessed by the most determined genie. We meet tattooed Uncle Muzo, who compiles the first Roma dictionary and composes love songs; Cousin Jasha and Didara, The Terminator, who both specialise in exorcising evil genies; and Uncle Suljo, the satellite dish selling vampire hunter; some of a host of fascinating oddball characters. Still steeped in their superstitious culture, their love of competition, music and laughter is beautifully captured in the cheerful interviews of our irreverent guide, Doctor Koljo. Over the past 20 years, the migration of the Roma from Eastern Europe into the wealthier western states, mainly Germany or Great Britain, has been perceived as both a social phenomenon and a problem. Western governments have been compelled to spin out strategies as to how to keep the migrating Roma away. Though located in one of the poorest regions of Europe, Shutka is a place apparently nobody wants to leave. After its premier in its home country, The Shutka Book of Records has quickly gained a cult following and the press honoured it by calling it one of the best films ever made about the Roma.

Chasing Ghosts: Beyond the Arcade (2007)

Director:
Lincoln Ruchti

IMDB:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0479879/

Synopsis
In the eighties, video games were synonymous with arcades, and games were bringing in enough quarters to fill the Rose Bowl. This led Iowa entrepreneur Walter Day to declare himself the sole authority on high scores. In 1982, Day launched his Twin Galaxies International Scoreboard. Teenage superstars came from all over North America to join Walter in a LIFE Magazine feature spread, which recognized them as video game world champions. This led to the nationally televised 1982 Video Game World Championships, a touring National Video Game Team, and the promise of fame, fortune and groupies. The film revisits Day and the LIFE players, now middle-aged men, as they reminisce on the arcade scene, its demise, and the dreams that crashed with it.

The King of Kong (2007)

Director:
Seth Gordon

IMDB:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0923752/

Review:
In the early 1980s, legendary Billy Mitchell set a Donkey Kong record that stood for almost 25 years. This documentary follows the assault on the record by Steve Wiebe, an earnest teacher from Washington who took up the game while unemployed. The top scores are monitored by a cadre of players and fans associated with Walter Day, an Iowan who runs Funspot, an annual tournament. Wiebe breaks Mitchell's record in public at Funspot, and Mitchell promptly mails a video tape of himself setting a new record. So Wiebe travels to Florida hoping Mitchell will face him for the 2007 Guinness World Records. Will the mind-game-playing Mitchell engage; who will end up holding the record?

Deep Water (2006)

Director:
Louise Osmond and Jerry Rothwell

IMDB:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0460766/

Review:
The first solo, non-stop sailing race around the world took place in 1968-69 and involved a handful of racers. It's a truly fascinating story about man vs. nature and man vs. himself. The story focuses on Donald Crowhurst, the tragic figure in this story. The film elegantly combines interviews with footage which was shot by the sailors themselves aboard their boats. The story is very suspenseful and sad as we learn the details behind the history of Donald Crowhurst. This is one of the best documentaries of the past few years. It has true human emotion in it as the men face this almost impossible task of navigating the world non-stop on their own.
