The film is a compilation of footage shot by students at John Marshall High School, an ethnically diverse institution just outside Hollywood. Kirby Dick handed out 10 palm-sized video cameras to students; after one week, the cameras were passed along to another 10 kids, and so on. A year later, Dick whittled down more than 700 hours of footage into 16 often startling mini-diaries.
The subjects boast a wide range of backgrounds and personalities, but one of their remarkable commonalities is the small role that school plays in how their lives function. Whatever happens in the classroom seems to have no relation to what happens outside; they only feel free to express who they are in the safe quarters of their bedrooms and living rooms.

What if someone came along who changed not the way you think about everything, but everything about the way you think?

This is a documentary about the most important thinker of the second part of the last century, the French philosopher Jacques Derrida. His influence has been immense in everything from high culture to art and media. The documentary is in itself a revelation, because it prefers to follow closely the methods and style of Derrida himself (roughly known as deconstruction), rather than present the philosopher in a traditional way.

Review:
An independent documentary about the Motion Picture Association of America's rating system and its effect on American culture since it acts as a means of censorship, affecting distribution and the potential for advertisement. The film discusses disparities in ratings and feedback: between Hollywood and independent films, between homosexual and heterosexual sexual situations, between male and female sexual depictions, and between violence and sexual content. Furthermore, Dick used a private investigator to unmask the identities of the ratings and appeals board members, whose identity is kept secret, and showing that the composition of these boards did not comply with the public assertions of the MPAA. The MPAA gave the original cut of the film an NC-17 rating for "some graphic sexual content": scenes that illustrated the content a film could include to garner an NC-17 rating. Kirby Dick appealed, and descriptions of the ratings deliberations and appeal were included in the documentary. The new version of the film is not rated. The film is also known for another controversy: the MPAA, a longtime bastion of anti-piracy, admitted to making unauthorised duplicates of a digital copy of the film that was provided to them for the purpose of obtaining an MPAA rating, despite having assured Dick that no copies would be made.

Review:
The film focuses on Tony Comes, a firefighter from Toledo, Ohio, who was first sexually abused by a Catholic priest when he was a fourteen-year-old student at a Catholic high school. Feeling ashamed, Comes kept his secret for nearly 20 years but was forced to confront his past after discovering that the priest, Dennis Gray, was living on the same street as Comes, his wife, and their two young children. Comes decided to go public and bring a lawsuit against the priest as well as the Church officials who had neglected to take action despite years of complaints.  The filmmakers gave Comes and his wife camcorders which they used to record many of the film's scenes. The film also features interviews with several other men who had been abused by Gray, and these survivors reunite to discuss their continuing struggles.

Sick: The Life & Death of Bob Flanagan, Supermasochist (1997)

Performance artist Bob Flanagan suffered from cystic fibrosis throughout his 42 years. This disturbing, poignant, and disarmingly funny documentary examines his odyssey to have control over his body through inflicting pain on himself. So much has been said and written about the more sensationalistic and shocking aspects of this movie but very little has been said about what it's REALLY about - the will to survive, and a suprising, moving love story. 'Sick' is one of the most honest movies ever made. Bob Flanagan let's us into his life in a way very few people have. He's a sadomasochist and does things most of us would never conceive of doing, sure, but by the end of this movie all you can think of is that he was a hell of a nice guy who will be surely missed by his family and friends. The hammer scene is unforgettable but much more confrontational are the scenes of Bob's death. These alone make this movie unique and truly impossible to forget. I strongly recommend this powerful movie to everyone with an open mind and heart.
