Blowing Up Paradise (2005)

Director:
Ben Lewis

IMDB:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1262404/

Review:
Ben Lewis (The King of Communism, Art Safari), traces the strange history of French atomic tests in the South Pacific from the 1960s to the 90s - a story of liberty, equality and radioactivity. Thousands of Polynesian islanders were transformed from fishermen into nuclear technicians and Greenpeace activists sailed a tiny yacht into the test zone to end atmospheric testing. The film also shows how a tiny group of Tahitian radicals set up the world's only anti-nuclear resistance cell and how some former test workers from France and Tahiti now suffer from cancers that many believe are linked to fall-out from the tests.

Paragraph 175 (2000)

Director:
Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman

IMDB:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0236576/

Review:
Paragraph 175 is a documentary film released in 2000, directed by Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman, and narrated by Rupert Everett. The film chronicles the lives of several men who were arrested by the Nazis for homosexuality under Paragraph 175, the sodomy provision of the German penal code, dating back to 1871. Between 1933 and 1945, 100,000 men were arrested under Paragraph 175. Some were imprisoned, others were sent to concentration camps. Only about 4,000 survived; see Paragraph 175 for full details. In 2000, fewer than ten of these men were known to be living. Five come forward in the documentary to tell their stories for the first time, considered to be among the last untold stories of the Third Reich.

The Cockettes (2002)

Director:
Bill Weber and David Weissman

IMDB:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0303321/

Review:
From 1969 to 1972, the Cockettes were San Francisco's gender-bending, LSD-fueled, on-stage party. In the late 1990s, Cockettes and friends tell the story, illustrated by archival footage: the impromptu spirit of Hibiscus, colorful sets and costumes, the move toward scripts and rehearsals, a few films, Rex Reed's delirious review that got them a ragged gig in New York - where exuberant West met enervated East, and the end. Highlights include visits from Divine, the arrival of Sylvester - who could really sing, Hibiscus's departure to form the Angels of Light, "Tricia Nixon's Wedding," and the joy of the group's survivors even as they mourn friends who died from drugs or AIDS.

Tarnation (2003)

Director:
Jonathan Caouette

IMDB:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0390538/

Review:
Part documentary, part narrative fiction, part home movie, and part acid trip. A psychedelic whirlwind of snapshots, Super-8 home movies, old answering machine messages, video diaries, early short films, snippets of '80s pop culture, and dramatic reenactments to create an epic portrait of an American family travesty. The story begins in 2003 when Jonathan learns that his schizophrenic mother, Renee, has overdosed on her lithium medication. He is catapulted back into his real and horrifying family legacy of rape, abandonment, promiscuity, drug addiction, child abuse, and psychosis. As he grows up on camera, he finds the escapist balm of musical theater and B horror flicks and reconnects to life through a queer chosen family. Then a look into the future shows Jonathan as he confronts the symbiotic and almost unbearable love he shares with his beautiful and tragically damaged mother.

Walking to Werner (2006)

Director:
Linas Phillips

IMDB:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0798898/

Review:
In winter of 1974, German film director Werner Herzog (Fitzcarraldo, Grizzly Man) walked from Munich to Paris to see his dying friend, film critic Lotte Eisner, hoping that by making the journey on foot he would somehow force her to stay alive. In summer 2005, hoping simply to meet the man who had inspired him to make movies, actor/filmmaker Linas Phillips made his own pilgrimage, walking 1,200 miles from Seattle to Herzog’s Los Angeles home. Braving freeway traffic, weather, the California Highway Patrol and his own self-doubt, Linas fulfills a dream that parallels the filmic dreams accomplished by his hero. But as one marginal roadside character after another shares a story with him– redemptive, tragic, funny – they begin to steal focus from Linas’ obsession with Herzog. There is Scorpio Johnnie Angel, who began walking thirteen years ago in Tallahassee, Florida, when his wife and daughters were killed in a convenience store hold-up. Eli, a nursing student, walked from Los Angeles to the Oregon Coast, intending to kill himself but finding a new start instead. Brian, an itinerant chainsaw carver in the Redwoods, tells the story of how he murdered his girlfriend’s brother eleven years ago. Punctuated by Herzog’s voiceovers, these stories and Linas’ own spiritual battles make Walking to Werner as much a testament to human vulnerability and redemption as a chronicle of the 1,200-mile quest to meet the legendary director.

Aileen Wuornos: The Selling of a Serial Killer (1992)

Director:
Nick Broomfield

IMDB:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0103634/

Review:
The Selling of a Serial Killer (1992) is a documentary film about Aileen Wuornos, made by Nick Broomfield. It documents Broomfield's attempts to interview Wuornos, which involves a long process of mediation through her adopted mother Arlene Pralle and lawyer, Steve Glazer. The film essentially highlights the exploitation of Wuornos by those around her and questions the fairness of her trial, given the vested interests of the police. The film was used by the defense in the Wuornos trial (2001) to highlight the incompetence of Wuornos' original lawyer. It was through this process that Broomfield decided to make a second film, Aileen: Life and Death of a Serial Killer. Furthermore, for the feature film Monster, Charlize Theron used this film as source material, apparently watching clips in-between takes in order to perfect her character. Theron won an Oscar for her performance, awarded on what would have been Wournos's birthday.

Little Dieter Needs to Fly (1997)

Director:
Werner Herzog

IMDB:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0145046/

Review:
In 1966, Dieter Dengler was shot down over Laos, captured, and, down to 85 pounds, escaped. Barefoot, surviving monsoons, leeches, and machete-wielding villagers, he was rescued. Now, near 60, living on Mt. Tamalpais, Dengler tells his story: a German lad surviving Allied bombings in World War II, postwar poverty, apprenticed to a smith, beaten regularly. At 18, he emigrates and peels potatoes in the U.S. Air Force. He leaves for California and college, then enlistment in the Navy to learn to fly. A quiet man of sorrows tells his story: war, capture, harrowing conditions, escape, and miraculous rescue. Where did he find the strength; how does he now live with his memories?

Hookers at the Point (2002)

Director:
Brent Owens

IMDB:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1407060/

Review:
Hookers at the Point opens with dark and dreary shots of the mean streets of Hunt’s Point in the Bronx. Definitely not a place to take the kids on vacation. Cars cruise in and out of this well-known pickup area, looking to score a quick date with one of many scantily clad bottom feeders hustling the streets and sidewalks. These are not tanned, buxom beauties of Scores or Hooters but everyday women who flaunt their individual, ahem, assets, for the wildly diverse tastes of their clients.
Throughout the film, a handful of hookers chat up the reasons why they got into the biz, how much money they make and who their clients are. Each personality lends a different perspective—some hate what they do but don’t know what else to do, some appear genuinely happy with what they do while others are indifferent to their situation. These aren’t well-rounded types you want to bring home to mom but this reviewer still came away with a newfound respect for the women at The Point.
Alas, the empathy is fleeting and soon erased with murky shots of men receiving ’oral pleasure’ in darkened alleys and exterior shots of gyrating cars. The intention here isn’t to arouse, but to inform. Director Brent Owens wants you to see and feel just how slimy the business of sex really is. Owens also lets us eavesdrop on a few uncensored, back-seat ’transactions’, some of which don’t run too smoothly. You can’t help but feel sorry for the women of The Point but at the same time you can’t help but question their sanity.

Heidi Fleiss: Hollywood Madam (1995)

Director:
Nick Broomfield

IMDB:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0113283/

Review:
Nick Broomfield's Heidi Fleiss: Hollywood Madam is a lively, bawdy, bizarrely fascinating chronicle - both of the life of the infamous Madam, and of Mr. Broomfield's efforts to track her down. Interviewing prostitutes and pornographers, Mr. Broomfield immerses himself so tirelessly in the hunt for Ms. Fleiss that he initially raises questions of journalistic integrity, not to mention an eyebrow or two. When the filmmaker heads for Ms. Fleiss' favorite bars, conducts motel room interviews or approaches a streetwalker (who threatens to spit on his camera), he appears to be showing several shades more investigative zeal than the subject warrants. But Mr. Broomfield, an accomplished documentary film maker whose last profiles were of Margaret Thatcher and the serial killer Aileen Wuornos, winds up justifying his interest in Ms. Fleiss and her world. Exploring the strange subculture of pimps, thugs and high rollers that nourished Ms. Fleiss and her entrepreneurial instincts, the film exposes a story that is pure Hollywood. Everyone seen here is obsessed with illusion. Everyone cares more about keeping up appearances than about telling the truth. And, as Mr. Broomfield makes clear by handing out $100 bills to those willing to talk on camera - including former Los Angeles Police Chief Darryl Gates - everyone here is for sale. Heidi Fleiss: Hollywood Madam reveals Mr. Broomfield to be much craftier than he first appears. Seen driving through Los Angeles and trying to solicit interviews via his car phone, he seems hopelessly overmatched. The people he seeks are tough customers, like Madam Alex and Ivan Nagy, the two alleged mentors who helped Ms. Fleiss early in her career and later came to regret it. Like many of the people Mr. Broomfield approaches, they take stock of his milquetoast manner and underestimate him. Big mistake.

Director:
Steve Cole

IMDB:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1353059/

Review:
Alan Yentob meets the renowned German film director Werner Herzog in this documentary from the BBC's flagship 'Imagine' series. Herzog is as far from the mainstream as it is possible to be, so it is a surprise when Alan finds him living in the Hollywood Hills. Spending time with Werner at some of his favorite Los Angeles locations, Alan attempts to uncover whether Herzog is the maverick risk-taker he appears to be... and getting more than he bargains for when he asks if the story about the director threatening to shoot Klaus Kinski during the filming of Aguirre, Wrath of God was really true...
