Death Row Diaries (1998)

Review:
She lives in a grey concrete box. It is full of stuffed animal, toys, family photographs and trinkets depicting angels. She is allowed one hour every day for exercise. She is 22 years old. She is sentenced to die. The spartan 3 m by 3.5 m cell at the maximum security prison for women in Nashville, Tennessee, is her last home. There is virtually no chance that Christa Gail Pike, the youngest woman on America's death row, will ever leave prison alive. In 1996, the then 19-year-old Pike was sentenced to die by electrocution for an unspeakably horrific crime. But Pike has a face that beguiles easily. Catherine Crier, the host of an American television news programme called Fox Files, described her as having a "sweet voice and childlike manner." A juror at Pike's trial put it better: "She has an angel's face and a devil's heart.

Burden of Dreams (1982)

Director:
Les Blank

IMDB:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0083702/

Review:
A documentary on the chaotic production of Werner Herzog's epic 'Fitzcarraldo' , showing how the film managed to get made despite problems that would have floored a less obsessively driven director. Not only does he have major casting problems, losing both Jason Robards (health) and Mick Jagger (other commitments) halfway through shooting, but the crew gets caught up in a war between Peru and Ecuador, there are problems with the weather and the morale of cast and crew is falling rapidly...

Satan Rides The Media (1998)

Director:
Torstein Grude

Review:
Satan rir media (Satan Rides the Media) is a 1998 Norwegian documentary by Torstein Grude. The film covers the controversy that surrounded black metal musician Varg Vikernes in the early 1990s, who not only has been tied to a series of church arsons in Norway, but received widespread media attention for the admitted murder of Mayhem band member Øystein Aarseth.

Hands on a Hard Body: The Documentary (1997)

Director:
S.R. Bindler

IMDB:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0116481/

Review:
This humorous documentary captures contestants in a 1995 competition held annually in a Longview, Texas, car dealership parking lot. A brand new Nissan pickup truck is the prize won by the person who can keep a gloved hand held against the truck for the longest period of time (with a 15-minute break every six hours and a five-minute break every hour). Six contestants drop out during the first 24 hours -- with only two contestants still standing by the 70th hour. With an event not far from the eccentric edge found in Errol Morris' documentary portraits of oddball Americana, director S.R. Bindler shot this film in Hi8 video, transferred to 16mm. Shown at the 1997 Santa Barbara and AFI/Los Angeles film festivals.

Slavoj Zizek: The Reality of the Virtual (2004)

Director:
Ben Wright

IMDB:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0419142/

Review:
The question in the film is not about "virtual reality", the idea that Zizek from the first frame calls "shabby", it is a shadow appendages ( "virtual") that accompanies our daily lives as well as (on a broader level) life of social, political and economic. S. Zizek develops his own original ideas, based on the theory of J. Lacan and Marx and using numerous examples from contemporary culture. Why do military drill involves as its complement obscene chants? Is it really innocent, the idea of tolerance, to which we all call? Stephen King is associated with Kant, Freud to Einstein, Donald Rumsfeld with the theory of the unconscious ... The film will be interesting for everyone interested in philosophy, psychoanalysis, and analysts today.

Wings of Hope (2000)

Director:
Werner Herzog

IMDB:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0249248/

Review:
A rather amazing, harrowing and inspirational documentary from Werner Herzog about a 1971 plane crash in a South American jungle. A plane loaded with 92 passengers crashed in this jungle and only a seventeen-year-old woman survived. This woman, Juliane Koepcke, had to fight her way through the jungle before being found twelve days after the crash. Herzog takes this woman back to the scene of the crash and they hike through the jungle showing us the paths she took to live. This is a brilliant documentary that has a claustrophobic feel because it's simply amazing that this woman would survive the crash and it's even more amazing that she'd be able to find her way out of this jungle. Another curious note is that Herzog himself was getting ready to film Aguirre, the Wrath of God and was going to take this same flight but it was sold out. Seeing the woman going through the wreck site was also fascinating but depressing considering all the things we see.

Werner Herzog Eats His Shoe (1980)

Director:
Les Blank

IMDB:

Review:
A film exactly described by its title. German film director Herzog had made a bet with aspiring director Errol Morris that, if Morris made a film, Herzog would eat his shoe. Morris went on to complete 'Gates of Heaven', so Herzog kept his promise. While eating the boiled shoe, Herzog carries on a dialogue with the film premiere audience on film, art and life.

Bells From The Deep (1995)

Director:
Werner Herzog

IMDB:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0106384/

Review:
Bells from the Deep is German director Werner Herzog's documentary investigation of Russian mysticism. The film is concerned with Jesus impersonators, exorcists and the legend of the lost city of Kitezh. This myth is about a city that was in peril of being destroyed by marauding Mongols, but whose citizens prayed for rescue. Hearing their prayers, God placed the city at the bottom of a deep lake, where it resides to this day. Some even say that one can hear the bells from the city's church.

In the Realms of the Unreal (2004)

Director:
Jessica Yu

IMDB:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0390123/

Review:
In 1973, at a Catholic poor house in Chicago, an 81-year-old retired janitor quietly died. His name was Henry Darger. Just months earlier, he had moved from the rented room where he had lived for over 40 years. When his landlords, Nathan and Kiyoko Lerner, cleaned out the clutter room, they discovered paintings: hundreds of brilliant watercolors, some over 10 feet long. The images were disturbing and mysteriously beautiful: little girls frolicking under stormy skies, little girls fighting soldiers, little girls being rescued by fantastic winged creatures. In many images, the girls were drawn naked, with penises.
The landlords soon found the other half of Darger's life's work, perhaps the longest novel ever written: the more than 15,000 page, single-spaced typed In the Realms of the Unreal, an epic story of the virtuous Vivian girls and their religious war against the evil Glandelinian army. For most of his life, Henry Darger, a recluse whom others called "Crazy," had lived in this rich fantasy world. It was a world he had kept to himself.
Today, Henry Darger is considered to be one of America's foremost outsider artists: an untaught artist working in isolation from the commercial or public eye. IN THE REALMS OF THE UNREAL, an adventurous documentary feature, explores the fantastic vision and shadowy life of this enigmatic artist.

First Person (2000)

Director:
Errol Morris

IMDB:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0240264/

Review:
Amazing series primarily using Errol Morris' invention the Interrotron for unusual people to tell their outré stories directly into the camera to the viewer. Almost every half-hour documentary episode focused on 1 person, especially scientists, criminals, cranks, plus everyday folks in strange circumstances. First season seen on Bravo, second on IFC. Having a roaming crew at the ready led Morris to start filming his Academy Award winning documentary on Robert McNamara, "The Fog of War." Some subjects came from Morris' back-file, others were newly uncovered. First season included the autistic woman scientist who designs humane slaughterhouses (Temple Grandin, "Stairway to Heaven"), the parrot whose testimony in a trial exonerated a man wrongly accused of murdering his owner, the ex-lobster fisherman devoted to being the first to see a live giant squid ("Eyeball to Eyeball"), and a serial killer groupie. Second season had some 2 parters such as a haunted passenger who landed a crashing jet liner, also the dot.com entrepreneur who believes first mate Gilligan is the new messiah ! Errol Morris hoped to continue "First Person," but funding was unavailable.

Temple Grandin understands and relates more easily to cattle than people. At home, she spends some of her most peaceful moments in a customized cattle "squeeze chute" — ordinarily used for immobilizing animals for inoculations.

All that stood between him and the California gas chamber was a one and a half pound bird with orange tail feathers. Was Max really repeating what he heard the night of the murder? You might consider him an expert, not on make-overs, but on do-overs. Now a bouncer, a nude model, and a cosmologist, Rick has taken that same commitment to repetition to the television program, Who Wants To Be a Millionaire. You see, Rick was on the show, and he lost to a bad question. With his record-breaking IQ, he didn't take it too well. After two years of exhaustive statistical analysis, looking at every question in every version of the game, he has ruined his very own life. Now on the edge of sanity, he is advancing a theory of cosmology in which the universe is seen as trillions of years old. "Why so old?" you might ask. To give it the opportunity to endlessly copy itself.

Mr. Personality — Dr. Michael Stone, forensic pathologist and homicide aficionado
Michael Stone thinks he has figured out the human psyche. Classify the negative traits. Draw up lists, charts, Venn diagrams. Fill books with them. Take those books, compare them with other books, use them as "diagnostic tools." Metaphors abound: the Radial Tire Model, the Wiggins Circumplex Model, anxiety clusters, the lost continent of incest. What makes a serial killer? Why are certain people prone to fits of rage? Take a candidate, run him through the proscribed formulas, and you end up with a precise and definitive answer. Psychopath, sociopath, pathological narcissist. Stone has built an endlessly self-reflexive world out of nomenclature. In the quest to classify others, has he merely gotten lost in himself?

Leaving the Earth — Denny Fitch, DC-10 pilot and hero
The plane was out of control. The flight control systems were inoperable, severed by shards of the Number Two engine. There were 296 S.O.B.'s, souls on board. A flying bomb filled with tens of thousands of pounds of explosive aircraft fuel. No one knew what to do. Not the pilot, not airline maintenance, not the manufacturer, not the aircraft designers, absolutely no one. Check pilot Denny Fitch, a passenger in first class, went forward to the cockpit, where he managed to control the plane using only the thrusters. The crash landing was a miracle. In subsequent simulations, no pilot could pull it off. Why was Denny Fitch on that plane? How did he manage to land it at all? 186 people lived, but 111 people died. Of course, everyone would have been dead if not for Fitch. Will the memory of the 111 ever leave Fitch in peace? Even though he did the impossible, will he always be haunted by the belief that he might have done the impossible better? The dream of a perfect landing...

Stupidity (2003)

Director:
Albert Nerenberg

IMDB:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0399704/

Review:
Stupidity is an action-packed comic exploration of the issue of willful stupidity in the modern world. Stupidity sets out to determine whether our culture is hooked on deliberate ignorance as a strategy for success. From Adam Sandler to George W. Bush, from the IQ test to TV programming, to the origins of the word moron, Stupidity examines the "dumbing down" of contemporary culture. Stupidity embarks on an exhaustive search into its meaning, and the implications of a culture that is obsessed and saturated with stupefying culture. Stupidity careens at warp speed through sound bites on topics from television news and reality TV shows, to Internet sites and popular films. Featuring opinions and comments from some of today's most recognizable figures, cultural critics, authors and academics, including John Cleese, Noam Chomsky, Selma Hayek and Bill Maher, Stupidity reveals that, despite our culture's extensive access to knowledge and information, humans continue to choose stupidity.

Llik Your Idols (2007)

Director:
Angélique Bosio

IMDB:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1091805/

Review:
This documentary retraces the evolution and disintegration of Transgressive Cinema, which is also sometimes referred to as No Wave film movement (obviously a play on the musical genre, New Wave which emerged around the same time). At the core of the No Wave film movement were a group of underground filmmakers from New York, most notably Richard Kern, Joe Coleman and Nick Zedd who created unconventional films that disregarded traditional cinema aesthetics. The imagery and subject matter in these films was often extreme, profoundly disturbing and always in your face. The greatest strength of this documentary is how it holds your attention even if you know little or nothing at all about the subject at hand. In the interview included with this DVD director Angélique Bosio mentions how she had enough material to work with that this documentary could have easily ballooned to a five four time length. At just under seventy three minutes this documentary still covers plenty of ground as everything moves along briskly. Also the images and film clips that appear in this documentary give viewer a well rounded sample of the film’s / art that was created as part of the No Wave film movement. Many musicians like Sonic Youth, Lydia Lunch and the Butthole Surfers contributed to the No Wave film movement. Ultimately Llik Your Idols is a fascinating documentary about a rarely discussed style of filmmaking and those who helped define it.

The Corporation (2003)

Director:
Mark Achbar and Jennifer Abbott

IMDB:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0379225/

Review:
Since the late 18th century American legal decision that the business corporation organizational model is legally a person, it has become a dominant economic, political and social force around the globe. This film takes an in-depth psychological examination of the organization model through various case studies. What the study illustrates is that in the its behaviour, this type of "person" typically acts like a dangerously destructive psychopath without conscience. Furthermore, we see the profound threat this psychopath has for our world and our future, but also how the people with courage, intelligence and determination can do to stop it.

American Movie (1999)

Director:
Chris Smith

IMDB:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0181288/

Review:
On the northwest side of Milwaukee, Mark Borchardt dreams the American dream: for him, it's making movies. Using relatives, local theater talent, slacker friends, his Mastercard, and $3,000 from his Uncle Bill, Mark strives over three years to finish "Covan," a short horror film. His own personal demons (alcohol, gambling, a dysfunctional family) plague him, but he desperately wants to overcome self-doubt and avoid failure. In moments of reflection, Mark sees his story as quintessentially American, and its the nature and nuance of his dream that this film explores.

China Blue (2005)

Director:
Micha X. Peled

Synopsis
They live crowded together in factory dormitories where water has to be carried upstairs in buckets. Their meals and rent are deducted from their wages, which amount to less than a dollar a day. Most of the jeans they make in the factory are purchased by retailers in the U.S. and other countries. China Blue takes viewers inside a blue jeans factory in southern China, where teenage workers struggle to survive harsh working conditions. Providing perspectives from both the top and bottom levels of the factory’s hierarchy, the film looks at complex issues of globalization from the human level.
The film which was made without permission from the Chinese authorities, offers an alarming report on the economic pressures applied by Western companies and the resulting human consequences, as the real profits are made - and kept - in first-world countries. The unexpected ending makes the connection between the exploited workers and U.S. consumers even clearer.

Hell's Bells 2: The Power and Spirit of Popular Music (2004)

Director:
Erik Hollander and James Gelet

Review:
Using music as a diagnostic tool, Hell's Bells 2 - The Power and Spirit of Popular Music examines the modern world, dusting it for the fingerprints of the men and ideas that have sought to dethrone God and set man up in

"... perhaps the greatest documentary on any subject ever! Lives will change." Ray Comfort - Internationally renowned author and evangelist

Over three years in the making, this much-anticipated sequel to the original Hell's Bells series weaves together science, satire, testimonies, parables, interviews, expansive research, and a vibrant Christian perspective to create a video series that is as fascinating as it is educational and evangelistic. Far more than just a commentary on the dangers of popular music, this eight-part, six-hour, up-to-the-minute documentary uncovers the "war of the worldviews" - the epic struggle between good and evil, sin and redemption for the souls of men and the destiny of our culture.
Great not only for evangelizing the lost and challenging Christians to greater holiness and service, it also serves as an outstanding primer on worldviews. Among other things, it features a fascinating history of the occult revivals that took place in the late 19th century (and that would later have such a profound impact in the 60s), an analysis of "chaos versus creation", nihilism, what it means to be truly "satanic" and much, much more. Using music as a diagnostic tool, Hell's Bells 2 - The Power and Spirit of Popular Music examines the modern world, dusting it for the fingerprints of the men and ideas that have sought to dethrone God and set man up in His place. Ideal for Bible study, family discussion, discipling young people (and older folks, too!), Sunday school class and cell groups, this is one video series that is guaranteed to provoke discussion, reflection, and, by God's grace, changed lives.
This six-hour documentary series is broken into eight parts.

Sick: The Life & Death of Bob Flanagan, Supermasochist (1997)

Director:
Kirby Dick

IMDB:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120126/

Synopsis
Performance artist Bob Flanagan suffered from cystic fibrosis throughout his 42 years. This disturbing, poignant, and disarmingly funny documentary examines his odyssey to have control over his body through inflicting pain on himself. So much has been said and written about the more sensationalistic and shocking aspects of this movie but very little has been said about what it's REALLY about - the will to survive, and a suprising, moving love story. 'Sick' is one of the most honest movies ever made. Bob Flanagan let's us into his life in a way very few people have. He's a sadomasochist and does things most of us would never conceive of doing, sure, but by the end of this movie all you can think of is that he was a hell of a nice guy who will be surely missed by his family and friends. The hammer scene is unforgettable but much more confrontational are the scenes of Bob's death. These alone make this movie unique and truly impossible to forget. I strongly recommend this powerful movie to everyone with an open mind and heart.

Chasing Ghosts: Beyond the Arcade (2007)

Director:
Lincoln Ruchti

IMDB:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0479879/

Synopsis
In the eighties, video games were synonymous with arcades, and games were bringing in enough quarters to fill the Rose Bowl. This led Iowa entrepreneur Walter Day to declare himself the sole authority on high scores. In 1982, Day launched his Twin Galaxies International Scoreboard. Teenage superstars came from all over North America to join Walter in a LIFE Magazine feature spread, which recognized them as video game world champions. This led to the nationally televised 1982 Video Game World Championships, a touring National Video Game Team, and the promise of fame, fortune and groupies. The film revisits Day and the LIFE players, now middle-aged men, as they reminisce on the arcade scene, its demise, and the dreams that crashed with it.

Boy Interrupted (2008)

Director:
Dana Heinz Perry

IMDB:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1327819/

Synopsis
Dana Heinz Perry's 'Boy Interrupted' is a moving and engrossing documentary about the mental illness that took the life of her 15-year-old son, Evan. Suffering from bi-polar disorder, Evan Scott Perry committed suicide in Oct., 2005 while in the depths of a black depression. Bi-polar disorder runs in the family. Evan's uncle, Scott, who suffered from the same mental illness, took his own life in 1971 at the age of 22. Well made, compassionate, insightful, and unbearably sad, 'Boy Interrupted' is an important film. Yet, yet... There's a troubling subtext here that is largely taken for granted by the Perry family. Simply put, the Perrys are rich folks, very rich folks. They have an apartment on Manhattan's Upper West Side, a house in the country, etc., etc., and are able to afford the best schools and--once Evan exhibits signs of madness--the very best psychiatric care and facilities that money can buy. When Scott died the family commissioned a renowned sculptor to create a special monument and Scott's brother, Hart Perry (Dana's husband and Evan's father) made a commemorative film at that time. When Evan died, the Perrys commemorated him with 'Boy Interrupted' and helped to fund a new building at one of the facilities that had treated him. These are warm, human gestures which assure that Scott and Evan will not simply vanish from the earth without a trace. But what if the afflicted Scott and Evan Perry had come from impoverished circumstances? No top shelf care. No fancy monuments. No documentary films. No kid glove treatment. Just unadulterated suffering, death, and subsequent, eternal anonymity. That's what happens to the thousands of Scotts and Evans who don't come from money. Think about that reality also.

Heysel 1985 - Requiem For a Cup Final (2005)

Director:
Lode Desmet

IMDB:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0846962/

Synopsis
On 29 May 1985 in Brussels' Heysel Stadium, the UEFA cup final between two of Europe's greatest teams, Liverpool and Juventus, was plunged into tragedy before the game even began. Thirty-nine fans - 32 of them Italian - died, crushed and suffocated, when a stadium wall collapsed, trapping the hundreds of Italians fleeing a charge led by Liverpool hooligans on the terraces. As the bodies laid out in front of the stadium were being transported to a military hospital a couple hours later, the final kicked off. Twenty years on, this documentary shows previously unbroadcast footage of the tragic events as they unfolded with interviews of Italians caught in the crush, and those who lost relatives and friends. It recounts the experiences of Belgian emergency workers who had to identify the victims - rendered unrecognisable in death - from their most personal possessions. Liverpool and Juventus players reflect on what they knew of the tragedy at the time and whether it was right to go out and play in the circumstances, as well as their role in the emergency efforts and attempt to calm traumatised fans. The documentary also offers an insight into the panic and confusion among those who took the decision to play the game - UEFA and Belgian FA officials, club representatives, international statesmen and the Belgian military. And how and why they reached the conclusion that to avoid further carnage, the final had to go ahead.

The Thin Blue Line (1988)

Director:
Errol Morris

IMDB:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0096257/

Synopsis
Errol Morris's unique documentary dramatically re-enacts the crime scene and investigation of a police officer's murder in Dallas. Briefly, a drifter (Randall Adams) ran out of gas in Texas and was picked up by a 16-year-old runaway (David Harris). Later that night, they drank some beer, smoked some marijuana, and went to the movies. Then, their stories diverge. Adams claims that he left for his motel, where he was staying with his brother, and went to sleep. Harris, however, says that they were stopped by police late that night and Adams suddenly shot the officer approaching their car. The film shows the audience the evidence gathered by the police, who were under extreme pressure to clear the case. It strongly makes a point that the circumstantial evidence was very flimsy. In fact, it becomes apparent that Harris was a much more likely suspect and was in the middle of a 'crime spree,' eventually ending up on Death Row himself for the later commission of other crimes. Morris implies that the D.A.'s and judge's desire for the death penalty in this case (which Harris would have been ineligible for, due to his youth), made Adams a scapegoat on which to pin this heinous crime.

Grey Gardens (1975)

Director:
Ellen Hovde and Albert Maysles

IMDB:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0073076/

Synopsis
Seventy-nine year old Edith Bouvier Beale and her fifty-six year old daughter, Edith 'Little Edie' Bouvier Beale, are Jacqueline Kennedy's aunt and cousin. Living alone with several cats, fleas and raccoons (the latter, wild, which live in the attic but who Edie feeds), the Beale's are discovered living in filth and squalor in Grey Gardens, their 28-room family mansion located in East Hampton, Long Island, the mansion which doesn't even have running water. Edie moved home twenty-four years earlier to care for her ailing mother. In what Edie considers a "raid" on their privacy, the Suffolk County Board of Health orders the Beale's to clean up the house or be evicted. With few exceptions, the Beale's are suspicious of the outside world. The Beale's comply with the order and renovate the house with financial help from their more famous relative. Mother and daughter are outwardly combative with each other, but their constant bickering masks a protective attitude each has for the other. Both cling to their past lives, with each still believing that that life can exist, Edith as a singer, and Edie as a social débutante (Edie is always sporting a fashionable scarf around her head). Old habits die hard as even two years after renovations on the home have begun, Edith lives primarily in her bedroom in her twin bed which is covered with garbage and cats, who use the corner of the room as a bathroom. And Edie constantly dreams of a time when she can return to living in New York City as a débutante and dancer, although one realizes that she is only using her mother as an excuse for what she really considers her comfortable current living situation.

The Pervert's Guide to Cinema (2006)

Director:
Sophie Fiennes

IMDB:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0828154/

Synopsis
The Pervert's Guide to Cinema takes the viewer on an exhilarating ride through some of the greatest movies ever made. Serving as presenter and guide is the charismatic Slavoj Zizek, acclaimed philosopher and psychoanalyst. With his engaging and passionate approach to thinking, Zizek delves into the hidden language of cinema, uncovering what movies can tell us about ourselves. Whether he is untangling the famously baffling films of David Lynch, or overturning everything you thought you knew about Hitchcock, Zizek illuminates the screen with his passion, intellect, and unfailing sense of humour. THE PERVERT'S GUIDE TO CINEMA cuts its cloth from the very world of the movies it discusses; by shooting at original locations and from replica sets it creates the uncanny illusion that Zizek is speaking from 'within' the films themselves. Together the three parts construct a compelling dialectic of ideas. Described by The Times in London as 'the woman helming this Freudian inquest,' director Sophie Fiennes' collaboration with Slavoj Zizek illustrates the immediacy with which film and television can communicate complex ideas. Says Zizek: 'My big obsession is to make things clear. I can really explain a line of thought if I can somehow illustrate it in a scene from a film. THE PERVERT'S GUIDE TO CINEMA is really about what psychoanalysis can tell us about cinema.

Waco: The Rules of Engagement (1997)

Director:
William Gazecki

IMDB:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120472/

Synopsis
This controversial documentary about the stand-off between an unorthodox Christian group - the Branch Davidians, under the leadership of the young, charismatic David Koresh - and the FBI and ATF in Waco, Texas, from February to April 1993 presents a different spin on the events from that of the United States government, which held that the Branch Davidians set the fire that destroyed their compound, and killed the vast majority of them, on April 19, 1993. Using footage from the 51 day siege, from the congressional hearings afterwards, from people involved in all aspects of the siege, and from experts technical, psychological, and religious, the movie suggests that the Branch Davidians were not a cult, but a valid religious group practicing under First Amendment freedoms who fell victim to first the ineptitude of an ATF raid designed to garner the agency positive attention and later the cruel, methodical work of the FBI, who over-saw the murder of the Davidians and then quickly covered it up.
